Tooele, UT (14 June 2008) –
Officials for the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup announced on Thursday that Speedworks R&D has been signed to provide “Arrive-and-Drive” entries for drivers wishing to compete in the Series. SpeedWorks has several team Ford Mustang FR500S entries available for competition, and can also provide race preparation services for drivers who already own the Ford Mustang FR500S and are looking for a team to manage race-to-race logistics and on-site event support.
Peter Parrott, who won the Indianapolis 500 three times as Rick Mears’ chief mechanic at Penske Racing, heads SpeedWorks R&D, which has a heritage of providing top-level motor racing capabilities in a variety of venues.
“We are excited to be involved with the Mustang Challenge because it is an excellent competition option for a wide scope of drivers,” said SpeedWorks R&D co-owner Hayden Harris. “Having partners like Ford Racing and Miller Motorsports Park is really important to the long-term success for a series like the Mustang Challenge, and SpeedWorks is confident that we can provide our customers with a very competitive race car and excellent support. We have two drivers joining us for Mid-Ohio, and we are really looking forward to growing in the future.”
To participate, drivers need a NASCAR / Grand Am license or equivalent. Miller Motorsports has a special driving school that enables drivers to obtain the necessary credentials to compete. In some instances, SpeedWorks can also provide coaching and extra practice at the race tracks to help prep the drivers for race day.
The Ford Racing ladder begins with the Ford Racing High Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park, located in Tooele, Utah, featuring specially prepared school Mustangs. The next rung on the ladder is the Mustang FR500S, which is the heart of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge.
Moving up the ladder puts racers behind the wheel of the Mustang FR500C, which competes in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series, and the FR500GT4, which competes in the GT4 European Cup. At the top of the ladder sits both the Mustang FR500GT and FR500GT3, which represent the ultimate race-bred Mustang. The FR500GT is currently being homologated for Grand-Am Rolex GT and other applications, while the FR500GT3 has already competed in select FIA GT3 European Championship races and will be campaigned full-time in 2008.
“The Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup is an excellent competition option for racers who have a passion for the Mustang and who want to take that passion to the track,” said Jamie Allison, Manager Ford Racing Performance Group. “SpeedWorks’ R&D involvement with the Series creates an excellent and hassle-free way for drivers to become involved in the Ford Mustang competition ladder, and we are excited to have that option available for drivers who are interested in finding out first-hand what the Mustang Challenge is all about.”
The Mustang Challenge held its inaugural race weekend in May at Road Atlanta, and will host round two of the 2008 championship this weekend at Mosport International Raceway.
“I was really impressed with Peter and Hayden, and we know that Speedworks is going to be a great option for our competitors,” said FRMC Series Director Lynda Randall. “The Mustang Challenge rules package is designed to keep the focus on the racing, and that means that you can be competitive in this Series whether you are hands-on, driving the rig and the race car, or if you just show up helmet in hand, ready to race, and Speedworks is going to be a great way to do that.”
