• Ford Racing Note – Drifting
  • As you may already know, Ford Racing and Toyo Tires run a Mustang in the Formula-D drifting competition. To date, it has been used largely as an engineering exercise, primarily to develop and test the aluminum block supercharged 4-valve engine. To this end, it's been a successful program -- the engine cranks out over 700 hp and completed the season without a single failure.

Here's more on the car from Dev Saberwal, one of the Ford Racing engineers responsible for the program:

"The engine is the Ford Racing 4.6L Aluminator shortblock with 4-valve FRPP heads, FRPP cams, and a 2.3L Ford Racing twin-screw supercharger, turning a TKO600 5-speed manual transmission, all of which can be purchased by the public today from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog."

"Engine control is provided by the same custom FRPP system the FR500C has used since its inception in 2005, but of course, with a different calibration"

"The car was designed from a body-in-white and it was built primarily at Ford's Experimental Vehicles Building. The engine has been set back and the radiator and the intercooler heat exchanger have been relocated to the rear of the car which yields a near 50/50 weight distribution."

"For the 2006 season, the car made approximately 550 ft-lbs of torque, and 610 hp at the rear wheels on 93 octane pump fuel. We anticipate more torque and power for the 2007 season."

"As far as engine durability goes, the program has proved successful so far with no engine related failures due to design or manufacturing, despite living most of its life at its 7000 rpm rev limit."

While the 700-hp car itself is good story, its driver, Ken Gushi, is equally interesting. You can read more about Ken here. Both car and driver are based in southern California.
